Deloitte Job - Check... Now What? [#permalink] New post 10 Aug 2011, 20:59
I am pumped about a new job at Deloitte, I start on Monday. I am still writing my GMAT in December to try and make a stab at a solid MBA, but I am aware that a lot of top schools may frown at my low GPA (2.8) from Undergrad. So my goal is to build up a career at Deloitte, and bring more WE and possibly a Designation to make that application more appealing. So my question to the gmatclubbers, If my end goal is to go into Consulting, which designation should I try to concentrate on?

CFA, CPA, ?

Any tips would be great, I'll be sure to speak to some consultants over the next month or so, but if the CFA is my path I have to make that decision before September 14th (deadline).

What's the position at Deloitte (not consulting I'm guessing)?

I have a BBA, to get into consulting they're asking for furthered education, so my goal is to get a designation along the way while writing my GMAT to get into a part-time MBA program.

The role is Production Assistant. It's within the Auditing department, with some administrative work towards the Tax and Consulting departments as well. For me it was ideal as to get into the organization and to have the chance to make a name for myself, impress as many people as I can, that's my goal. So my plan is to talk to as many individuals in there as I can and see how they got into their consulting roles. But I figured I would look on here as well!

Nphelan, are you working for Deloitte in Canada? I worked for them in Western Canada in audit - I had been planning to go for my CA designation but I hated the work. I had loved accounting in school but I found that the practical application of it, especially after my first year, was mind numbingly dull.

One thing I found about DTT, though, especially if you want to move around, is that it's important to be really social. You will find things a bit odd because you're not in a straight audit role (yet you're working with audit) and you are doing work with various departments - in my experience, different groups really stuck with each other. You will have the advantage of being in the office a lot so take advantage of drinks, firm events, departmental events, etc. Talk to the managers, senior managers and partners like they're real people - I found that our management was often dying to have a normal conversation because they were stuck in their offices all day... and a lot of junior staff were often too nervous to behave normally.

If you have any questions about the corporate culture, let me know - I learned a lot while I worked there, not just about accounting but about client relationships, office politics and myself.

did you put your 2.8 gpa on your resume and in the online application process?

I have a 2.8 gpa also, and im worried i wont get the job because im afraid they're going to weed out the people with low gpa's... I was going to leave it blank, but some people say that creates even more suspicion (hence it's better to put it regardless).

However I made great impressions on recruiters, partners etc... @ networking events.

Please let me know! If you got the job and they considered your other qualifications despite the gpa, it means I have a shot :) Thank you!

What's this about writing a GMAT? Is GMAC still giving pencil & paper versions of the exam?

CFA - it's the only thing I think that is really valuable now-a-days.

Most Commonwealth countries say "writing an exam" as opposed to the Americanized "taking an exam".
