I think the answer is E.

The subject is "United States citizens". If we flip the sentence around it might help.

United States citizens "with" only 5 percent of the world’s population -> wrong
United States citizens "as" only 5 percent of the world’s population -> seems a bit wrong
United States citizens "being" only 5 percent of the world’s population -> strange sentence construction
United States citizens "despite having" only 5 percent of the world’s population -> this would be correct if it was united states instead of citizens
United States citizens "although accounting for" only 5 percent of the world’s population -> citizens can account for 5% so this seems right to me.

What is the OA?

'Despite having' gives the wrong meaning. Look closely.

Hello usre123

First of all, we need a contrast meaning here, not a comparison. If you use comparison, you compare 5% of the world's population to what?.

Secondly, "AS + noun/noun phrase" ==> "as" is a PREPOSITION. There are only 3 circumstances: conveys function, equation or time/when, BUT NOT comparison.
For example:
Function AS: As a new manager, Mark always works more than 10 hours per day
Equation AS: I think of you AS my friend.
Stage AS: AS a child, I though I could fly.

Thus, "as" does not make any sense here and is wrong usage.

Hope it helps.

I chose E, however I do not understand what is wrong with B (it is true that this choice sounds awkward, but is there anything else wrong?).
