Except for C and E all other choices look awkward.

now the use of could in C is not correct.

so E is the only correct choice.

C also has a clear S-V agreement problem.

E is my choice as well.

Only E maintain the S-V agreement and correct.
B is ungrammartical.

A,D-breaks V-S (consumption... reverses)
B, arteries consumed?
C-breaks V-s( consumption has)
