A question , why in choice E "that the levels of bacteria in seawater at popular beaches be measured and the results" be not required?

Ordered "that" would be the right connect, all option minus B & E, change the meaning )reads almost like ....ordered "seawater" (D) or ..ordered "the level of..." (C).

Of these two options E is most concise (I guess I'm becoming predisposed to reject the answer option with "being")

The sentence is using subjunctive mood. The word "ordered" should be followed with "that" and verbs should be used followed by "be"

(A) the levels of bacteria in seawater at popular beaches to be measured and that the results be -"to be measured" should be "be measured"
(B) that seawater at popular beaches should be measured for their levels of bacteria, with the results being -GMAT is against the use of "should be" in subjunctive mood
(C) the measure of levels of bacteria in seawater at popular beaches and the results to be -Awkward sentence.
(D) seawater measured at popular beaches for levels of bacteria, with their results -Awkward sentence.
(E) that the levels of bacteria in seawater at popular beaches be measured and the results -Correct. "Be measured" used correctly; the results (be) published is correct, notice there is no need to repeat "be" here, its implied.

IMO E

'E'

because ordered should be followed by that and verb's infinitive form 'be' needed here.

One more E.

Also, note that second "be" after results is omitted here. Second "be" is not required for concision sake.

(A) the levels of bacteria in seawater at popular beaches to be measured and that the results be
(B) that seawater at popular beaches should be measured for their levels of bacteria, with the results being
(C) the measure of levels of bacteria in seawater at popular beaches and the results to be
(D) seawater measured at popular beaches for levels of bacteria, with their results
(E) that the levels of bacteria in seawater at popular beaches be measured and the results

This is sunjunctive mood. So, we need that after ordered..

Hence, A, C and D are out

In subjunsive, there is no place for should after that..therfore, B is also out..

E is the only option left..

Problem with OA. [#permalink] New post 19 Nov 2009, 09:11

I see that OA is E.
Isn't that in E it should be "the results be printed"?
Though all other options seem wrong I was not satisfied with E.

I would go with E since it shows perfect usage of subjunctive though this option could have been a lil better by adding 'be'
But it is the best answer among all 5.

C cann't be the answer because 'ordered' pushed this sentence into the sunjunctive mood requiring subjunctive verb.....so Measure is to follow 'to'

ordered ....to measure...

Hope it has helped...

Kudos?!?

for the subjunctive mood, we need that. So eliminate A, C and D
In B should is wrong. And with the results being is also wrong.

E rectifies the problem. and it maintains ||ism
be measured .. be published
