Would anyone be so kind to explain to me the exact different usages of these 2 idioms? When is it appropriate to use each of them in their different context?

determined by is used when the target is a law or a solid truth, such as :
"hormonal activity is determined by gender"
determined from is used when the target is data
eg. "the activation sequence of hormones was determined from the gene code for protein R3"
