Can someone clarify the difference of each sentence?

In 1791 Robert Carter III, one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Virginia, stunned his family, friends, and neighbors by filing a deed of emancipation, setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property.

My take:

I. Means that he set free all of his slaves, and he owned more than 500 slaves

II. Means that he set free more than 500 slaves, and he owned 500 slaves (probably set free slaves that he didn't owned, making the number of slaves that he set free greater than 500).

III. Means that he set free more than all of his slaves, and he owned 500 slaves.

Think No II means that he set free more than 500 slaves but he actually owns a lot more.
A good explanation Brisks.
