Did as well as I thought I would (480) have questions [#permalink] New post 28 Dec 2006, 18:48
I took the GMAT for the first time today and I wasn't surprised with my score (480). I think I just wanted to go in there and try it to calm my nerves a bit. I've only been prepping for 3 weeks and even then it's been pretty inconsistent with the holidays and all. You really do get what you put into it!

My breakdown was 27 verbal and 29 quant. I was scoring around 34 on my verbal in practice so this was a big disappointment for me. The quant I knew I would struggle with since it's been almost ten years since I've taken a math course. The big surprise was how many DS questions I receieved. It felt like more than I saw during a typical practice test.

My quant really needs work if I'm going to get 600+ like I want to. Not to mention the fact that applying for an accounting program with a low Q score won't work in my favor. I've heard many people discuss the Manhattan GMAT books and was considering buying them. Are there better options? I think my biggest issue is I've forgotten many of the basics and it's really causing me to struggle.

Thanks for any advice,

-Kevin

I think most people recommend Manhattan GMAT for verbal, not for quant. Kaplan is good for quant but it's really hard, so I would start with the official guide before you try Kaplan.

From your post, I think the problem is not with the books.
But since you've taken it, it is time for you really to treat it importantly and get serious about it for the next time. Although it is not your dream score, you are familiar with the exam environment. It is what you have gained.

so get good books, focus and be really serious with the GMAT, then eventually it will reward you.

MGMAT books are quite good.
For math basics, Kaplan premiere 2007 has a very good math appendix section that lists out all the basics you need to know. It is better than the OG math basics which is not written to be understood easily.
MGMAT books may cover it as well, for you to find out.

"From your post, I think the problem is not with the books."

Agreed tennis_ball, the motivation has clearly not been in me to this point. Thanks for the suggestions on the books.
