Didn't Finish GMAT [#permalink] New post 14 Jan 2012, 15:07
Took the GMAT today and didn't get to the last 3 math questions. Got a 720 overall, 99th percentile on verbal but only 66th percentile on quant. I wasn't aware until now that there is a penalty for not finishing the exam. I feel like my score might have been much higher because I thought I did well and figured out the question I was on but when I looked up time was out. Is it worth retaking for m7 schools? I have a CPA, part of the CFA, and a 790 on the math portion of the SAT which sort of justify my math ability but maybe not enough. What do you guys think?

Thanks

Thats a big bummer because not only do you get penalized for getting those problems wrong, but there is an extra penalty for leaving the problems blank. It would have been better to even guess and get all 3 wrong. You SAT score will not come into play, and if you're considering an M7 score, they are probably going to want to see 80% or above in your Quant. Unfortunately, it looks like a retake may be in store for you. With getting those 2 or 3 of those last problems right you could have score 750+. Sry, but it sounds like you have all the knowledge, now you need the timing.

A 720 is an excellent score, but with such a lopsided breakdown with a low quant, it's going to raise a red flag questioning your quant ability. The only way I would consider not retaking is if you can easily show that you are strong in quant including in your essays, letters of rec, job, CFA, CPA, and math classes in college.

Wow - a 99th percentile on verbal but only 66th percentile on quant and you still managed to get 720!

This is further evidence that your verbal score matters more than your quant score (relative to the competition).

Another student had a similar experience: A 99th percentile on verbal but 85th percentile on quant and got a 760

If your profession is quant oriented and you already have part of your CFA - I wouldn't stress about it. I've seen examples of investment bankers who scored poorly in quant and managed to do fine in admissions. Up to you, but I'd say your score is "good enough" - at least for most demographic pools - just move on to the next part of the application process.
