Diet for Test Day! Any sugguestions?? [#permalink] New post 23 Aug 2006, 10:57
Hi Guys,

My exam date is coming up on Sept 5th, 2006. It'll be my 2nd attempt after my dismal performance back in May.

I think one of the biggest mistakes I made on the 1st attempt was to study right up until the night before the exam... :S Now I know better to stop all studying 24hrs before the exam :P

But as for the test day, can someone recommend some suggestions on what dietary choices would best help keep my energy up and focused on test day? My exam in at 10am.

Here was what I was thinking:

- Get up around 7am and eat a regular hearty breakfast... perhaps oatmeal or cereal.. maybe even a banana

- pop some chocolates before the actual start of exam? sugar kick?

- after quant, have an energy bar ("PowerBar" or something like that). Have some gatorade.

I realized that to do well in the exam, one has to keep high level of concentration at all times so that silly mistakes are not made. So any suggestions in this regard will be very helpful.

thanks,
jjhko

GMATT73 et al. have covered all you need to know in a thread on the forums. Its a sticky. You shouldnt have trouble finding it.

The most useful thing would be to sleep early and sleep well. Make it a habit of sleeping very well leading up to test day. Of all the things that affect a test score, I feel that lack of sleep , unnecessary pressure, impatience and lack of concentration do the job for most of us. If possible, run for a couple of miles a few hours before taking the test . It makes you feel positive and you can definitely concentrate better.

hope that helps.

Just eat something light.

Avoid sugars. They give you highs and lows. Banana's are the worst for this.

Non fat Yogurts, grain cereal, etc... better choices.

I made the mistake of filling up the night before and right in the middle of quant nature called. My 2nd attempt is this Saturday (8/26) and I'll be eating light and going to bed early.

I like the idea of getting a few miles in before the test. Thanks for the idea.

Do not do anything different than you usually do. If you drink 5 cups of coffee every morning, drink 5 cups on test day. If you eat nuts and berries every day, eat nuts and berries on test day. Treat it like a normal day.

The ONLY deviation would be to avoid all stress. If you know taking a call from X co-worker, spouse, child, friend... will stress you out, let it go to voice mail and answer it after the test.

OHHHH one more thing, be smart. Don't drink 9 glasses of water while you eat a 2 lb burrito before the test. Even if you would do that in a normal day!

Just my opinion...

I wanted to add one more thing.

DONT TAKE HEAVY MEAL WITHIN 1-1.5 HOURS PRIOR TO THE TEST. I mean if your test is at 11:00 AM then don't eat anything heavy, except juice etc., after 9:30 AM. There is a scientific reason behind this. After eating heavy meals all your digestive organs start working hard (contracting muscles, secreting enzymes). So blood supply to these organs is increased and blood supply to brain is decresed. Thats why you feel dizzy after heavy meals.
