Re: Difference in MGMAT Editions... [#permalink]
4th Ed is the 2009 book.

The difference is not anything phenomenal. The MGMAT people beefed up with more examples, more explanations, longer idiom list, etc.

The the short sets and the challenge problems are largely unchanged. I *think* there might be more problems at the end of each chapter. I have both 3rd and 4th. I'll review them within a week (cousin has all my 3rd ed books) and get back to you.

1st/2nd ed are wire bound. 3rd (2007) and 4th (2009) are glue bound.

(I had a typo on my previous reply, 3rd ed is 2007, 4th ed is 2009. 2005 is 2nd ed. Major beef up of SC is from 3rd to 4th. Sorry about the confusion)

According to Amazon for the SC book:

3rd Edition (glue-bound): 278 pgs
4th Editions (glue-bound): 312 pgs

35 page difference. I don't think I'll go and buy a whole new book, but it would be nice to know what the differences are. I may go ahead and get the new edition if it is significantly different enough. Please get back mohater. I really appreciate it!

So am I correct in assuming the 2005 SC book should be upgraded to 3rd or 4th ed?

That depends on what you "need". If after going through 2005 books, you're doing 650+ on practice exams and still have plenty of other content to review (GMATPrep, GMAT Club questions, etc.), you could very well not need anything else.

How's your prep going with the books you have?

phoenix09, most likely yes, upgrade to 4th edition. The 3rd edition is from 2008, so it's not that old, but it is still outdated. 2005 just seems far back enough that significant change may have been made, as mohater pointed out. I am guessing 2005 is 1st or 2nd edition?

Re: Difference in MGMAT Editions... [#permalink]
Just to clarify...I have what appears to be the 2nd Edition of the set..I bought them back in 2005 but never had the chance to use them. They are not wire bound, but they indicate a 2005 printing date.

So I am not so concerned with the difference from 3-4 especially for SC...but wondering if anyone knows of a significant upgrade in strategies etc from the 2-3.

Got it.

In that case search is your best friend to compare the 2nd and 3rd editions when the 3rd came out a year or two ago: mgmat-guides-2005-v-2007-any-significant-difference-66621.html#p488703

Hi Guys,

I bought the MGMAT guides from Craiglist, but they are from 2005 (they refer to OG 11th edition)

Should I buy the new version set?

Are there substantial changes between my version and the 4th edition?

BTW, I will probably buy one of the new guides anyway(most likely the SC Guide) to get access to the 6 CATs

Thanks!

Don't think they have been revised that much, but let me check with MGMAT.

I have one (most probably unconnected) question: is GMAT really getting harder from year to year? I mean in near past: 2009 vs 2008, 2008 vs 2007 and so on

I bet there is a topic somewhere here about that, just couldn't find it

Re: Difference in MGMAT Editions... [#permalink]
Hi!

Thanks for buying Manhattan GMAT books!

The 2005 editions are in fact 3 editions outdated. Since the 2005 editions, we have updated quite a bit. In fact, in our 2005 editions, I believe Critical Reasoning & Reading Comprehension were still just one book! We've added a lot of new content as well as strategies, including everything from weighted averages and quadratic equations to techniques for difficult language during reading comprehension and modifier exceptions in sentence correction. The books are, in fact, completely different.

While I am sure you could still get a lot of use out of the 2005 editions, the 4th editions are more comprehensive and offer a reflection of the test which is probably a little more accurate. If you chose to buy used editions, I would urge you to at least try and find copies of our 3rd edition.

If you are still on the fence, I would suggest visiting one of our centers or a Barnes & Noble and flipping through the 4th edition to see exactly what has changed.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to give us a call at 1-800-576-4628.

Thanks!
