dilemma regarding GMAT Retake..Help me out!! [#permalink] New post 19 Nov 2009, 09:15
Hi All,

I am an Indian IT Applicant .I am planning to apply to US and UK B Schools for fall 2011 intake. I have taken the GMAT 4 times with scores ranging from 640- 660. The Mean score for Indian applicants for my target colleges(30- 50 ranked US colleges) is around 700. So i am in a dilemma whether i should retake the GMAT and score 700+ to improve my candicacy especially considering the fact that my profile is pretty ordinary. But i am skeptic that the adcoms will view me unfavourably if i take the GMAT 5 times. So could you please let me know whether i should go for the GMAT for a 5th time.Have any of you known candidates who have made it to top B-schools after taking GMAT 5 times?

vd53,

I don't think you should try again. Even a score of 700 will not likely get you into a top program if the rest of your application is "ordinary." Better spend that time and energy making your profile more distinctive. You may want to read Accepted.com's advice for Indian applicants.

Hope this helps,

Hi,

I had a query regarding retaking the GMAT, I had taken the test this August and got a low score of 620. I feel it was bad luck and no prep and am confident that I can improve it to 700.(So in your opinion does it make sense for me to retake it or not? ) I intend to apply for mainly UK and other European schools.

Cambridge
Oxford
Cranfield
Warwick
Lancaster
Ashridge

These are the ones I am targeting, however one of the indian counsellor told me that if I retake the test within 6 months of my previous date, the bschool will take an average score and it will do me no good.
I want a clarification on the same, because schools like ISB takes the highest score.
Could you specificly tell me if the above mentioned schools take the average, or highest or the latest score into consideration. That will help me decide if i should retake the exam for the current year application or not. Though the bschools mention a score above 600 as their requisite the average score has been ranging in 660 and my work experience is of 4 yrs, which is below their average WE. Plus a better GMAT will improve my chances of a scholarship.
I have written to the bschools too, but so far there has been no response from them and time is of essence here.

Thanks, I'd appreciate an early reply.

kyugi,

If you've only taken the GMAT once with no prep, then you should definitely take it again. I have never heard of the 6-month rule that you counsellor mentioned, but I don't know the specific policies of the schools you mentioned. I think you should go ahead and take the test as soon as you are ready, no earlier and no later.

Good luck,
