dilemma regarding GMAT Retake..Help me out!! [#permalink] New post 19 Nov 2009, 09:17
Hi All,

I am an Indian IT Applicant .I am planning to apply to US and UK B Schools for fall 2011 intake. I have taken the GMAT 4 times with scores ranging from 640- 660. The Mean score for Indian applicants for my target colleges(30- 50 ranked US colleges) is around 700. So i am in a dilemma whether i should retake the GMAT and score 700+ to improve my candicacy especially considering the fact that my profile is pretty ordinary. But i am skeptic that the adcoms will view me unfavourably if i take the GMAT 5 times. So could you please let me know whether i should go for the GMAT for a 5th time.Have any of you known candidates who have made it to top B-schools after taking GMAT 5 times?

First question would be, do you feel there will be any reason that you would do any differently this time? If you take it again and you don't think there is anything different you would be doing than all the previous times, then no. You should not retake. I think you should focus on knowning why you are hovering around 640-660 level even after 4 tries.

If you can do conciderably better... say 700 or above. Then yes retake. Since 700 at 5 tries would be better than 660 at 4 tries. Some schools do not ask how many times you've taken the exam which would be a plus for you.

In my opinion, I do not see the benefit in taking the GMAT for a 5th time if you are targeting top 30-50 schools. Retaking the GMAT takes considerable amount of preparation time. The GMAT average of mid-tier schools are in line with your score and not in the 700s. Your score is within the intake range of these schools. Taking the GMAT a 5th time will not guarantee you with a 700+ score. You should use the time you can save from GMAT prep for organizing a stronger overall application.

I would say focus on your application and how you would distinguish yourself from other applicants with a similar background instead of retaking the test. If you have time after your applications are done, I would consider a re-take, provided you have done some additional studying/courses which would boost your score.

i don't know anyone specifically who has taken it 5 times, although in my opinion, 5 would be reaching the "limit" that adcoms are comfortable with - especially since there was such a minor improvement on your last 4 tests. if you do plan on retaking it, my advice would be not to do it right away, and instead study using the resources on this website. plan to take it in the spring or summer after a few months of studying - you should be able to crack the 700 barrier then.

also one myth to note - if you have an ordinary profile, a 700 won't be any different from a 660 or an 800 for the top schools (top 10 schools). if that's the case, then you should really focus on custom tailoring your essays to show a unique / different side of you, rather than just focusing on improving your GMAT score
