The equations x2 + ax + 1 = 0 and x2 + bx + c = 0 have a common real root, and the equations x2 + x + a = 0 and x2 + cx + b = 0 have a common real root. Find a + b + c.

unwaranted presupposition:

Rakesh is not presupposing anything-- he's making a value statement, with which I and (I'd posit) many others agree. While I don't condone his delivery with the CAPS LOCK and the silly emoticon, I think he's got a point.

The purpose of this forum is to educate and learn.

If you post a question, there is a WARRANTED assumption that you are either sharing a interested gmat question for all of us, or need help with a legitimate GMAT question.

When you post a difficult question just for the sake of "stumping the board" with no answer or explanation (or even evidence that this is a legitimate and relevant GMAT question) you are wasting everyone's time and unnecessarily frustrating those who are trying to learn.

This board is NOT a place to show off by posting hard questions out of some puzzle or contest book, especially if you are going to be too lazy to follow up with the answer and solution both of which should be relevant to the GMAT.

I rarely use the moderator powers that have been granted to me but continued abuse of this will tempt me...
