Do Admissions Committees Contact References/Letters of Rec? [#permalink] New post 14 Dec 2010, 17:42
Does anyone know whether committees ever call references or letter of recommendation writers?

A supervisor who I am considering asking for a recommendation speaks English as a second language and has a very noticeable stutter. I am not worried about his ability to write a strong letter, but he can give off an extremely poor impression on the phone to individuals who don't know him very well.

I should add that this individual would be my only true "professional" recommendation (I have it on good authority that the other two will be perfectly acceptable given my background), in case that makes it more likely that he would be contacted. I am trying to decide whether to go ahead and ask him for a letter, or to look elsewhere. Thanks for the help.

Chances are, the AdComs are not going to contact them directly. When you're admitted, AdComs outsource the job of verifying your information to a third-party (i.e. Kroll). With this third-party, it'll verify your work experience, your salary, your social security # (if applicable), as well as your recommendation/recommender's authenticity.
