Do I even stand a chance? [#permalink] New post 22 Jul 2014, 18:53
So as I've been browsing the forums and comparing myself to others, I realize I'm probably not the most ideal of business school candidates. Before I embark on a course to study and take the GMAT, I'm curious if I even stand a chance of putting together a solid application that would warrant consideration in a top 10-20 school. Any input is graciously welcome.

Nationality:
Naturalized US Citizen, born in Poland

Gender:
Male

Age:
Just turned 32

Undergraduate:
Colgate University. Education major/Biology minor, awful GPA (2.4). I was a chronic procrastinator and never really got it together during those formative years.

Work Experience:
1. Taught high school algebra for a year then decided it wasn't for me.
2. Worked for my father's remodeling business for 2 years in operations.
3. 6 years at a financial planning firm that is a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs, 3 promotions.

GMAT:
Haven't taken it yet but I'm a fairly strong test taker and could venture I could crack 700 with 100 hours of studying.

Goals:
I enjoy personal finance but feel I'd like to explore other opportunities in corporate finance or consulting.

Issues:
My GPA is terrible and I'm starting to feel a bit old so my confidence isn't too high. Judging by everyone's experience if I take the GMAT and score well, would that even allow me half a chance or would I just get laughed at and thrown into the recycling bin?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Don't be so pessimistic. I believe you have certain strengths... Your work experience shows a potential of solid career growth. It seems that you have an ability to score high in GMAT (which would compensate for your low GPA).

Basically, you recognising that that you messed up in undergrad because of lack of focus... but since then, you have become more mature and more focused on your career would address admission committee copncerns regarding your capability to handle the coursework...

My suggestion would be not to delay it anymore...as chances of getting into an MBA program would become exponentialy difficult in coming years...
