do i stand a chance [#permalink] New post 19 Oct 2013, 20:39
Hi Experts

I am an Indian, female, 30, with 8 years work ex at mid-managerial level in garments exports and sourcing, for some great brands like gap/ralph lauren/ debenhams etc. I want to apply for a one-year full-time mba (cannot afford a two-year with my newborn baby). I was hoping for high 600's considering my mock test scores but i ended up scoring a disappointing 600.

now the application deadlines are approaching and i will lose another year if i retake. i had aimed for ISB Hyderabad, Insead, IMD, IE, kellogg, and oxford said- all full time one year MBAs. But with such a low score, i am at a loss what to do! I really cannot waste another year.

I want to know, if i present excellent essays/recommendations, do i still stand a chance in any of the above mentioned schools? Or any other great 1 year full time one program that i missed in the list?

Many thanks for your inputs.

Hi PSMBAPS,

Thanks for your post. Unfortunately I have limited information about your candidacy with what you had written. Although there are many factors that an admissions team will consider in your application, your GMAT score is important and your score is a fair amount below the averages of the programs you are considering. For this reason I do recommend you take the exam again. One thing that is important to remember is that your highest GMAT score is self-reported on your application, so admissions teams will focus on your best score.

If you do decide to take the exam again, we provide free GMAT advice here: http://www.stacyblackman.com/test-prep-hub/. MBA.com also provides 2 free official GMAT practice tests.

Cheers,
Conrad and the Stacy Blackman Team

Even though your experience is good enough, you didn’t give your complete profile to evaluate your candidature properly. A score of 600 is way below than the average of any top school you have mentioned. A good score (700) complemented with great application will give you a chance of getting an interview from these schools. I recommend you retake GMAT and focus all your energies on a 700+ score rather than applying to all these schools and getting rejected.
Having said that, your gender and your non-IT profile will help your application. I understand your family and age scenario. Your age will be working against you. If you don’t have time to retake GMAT, focus a lot on your essays. I am confident you can get into one of your target schools esp IE or Oxford if you can write good essays. Be aware few schools don’t consider reapplicants favorably.
