Do you need to explain what your company does in your resume [#permalink] New post 03 Nov 2013, 12:24
I have worked as an engineer at a top oil-field services company and at a leading semi-conductor capital equipment manufacturing company. Though both companies are publicly traded and very well known within their respective industries, few people outside those industries know what these companies do.

So in my MBA application resume, do I need to mention what these companies do, so that the ad com has a context of what kind of work I do/did? My only concern is wasting 4 lines to talk about the companies I worked at instead of using those to talk about my accomplishments there.

I would appreciate some feedback from experts here.

Hello there!
If, as you say, few people have heard of your company, I recommend that you include a 1-line description of the size of your company and what it does, just as you have given us in your post.

Do note that I said '1-line description' - I believe that spending a total of 2 lines on this is a good investment of resume real estate - it will make the job of the application reader a little easier, and you don't lose anything if they have heard of the company previously.

If you do not want to include the company description, you could instead elaborate a little about your role in the company, making sure that this role description makes the nature of the company evident. For instance,

Work Experience
Co. XXX May 2012 - present
Application Engineer - Semiconductors Inspection
Responsible for the development of next generation optical wafer inspection products, and demonstrating product performance to clients.

In this case, the title and role description clarify leave no doubt in the reader's mind about what the company does. Contrast this with:

Work Experience
Erfolg Pvt. Ltd. May 2012 - present
Project Lead
Responsible for flawless implementation of B2B campaigns, and maintaining & analyzing market reports

Do you see the difference? I hope this helps. :)
