Whats wrong with A?
Is'nt the parallelism lost in E?
afflicts some people in a contaminated area while sparing

My best guess is "it" is a problem in A

"it " doesnt have an proper antecedent.

"listeriosis" has come in between the actual bacteria and "it"

I would say E is short and sweet and as far as A is concerned it is not clear if "it" is referring to Listeria bacterium or listeriosis
