E sounds better, but I still vote for A because it is parallel.

I would also go for E 'while sparing others' i.e. does smth while doing smth

would be nice to know the official answer.

Tricky one....I am not able to get any parallel markers from the options.

My will says the answer is option (A) but OA says the answer is option (E)

"it" is wrong because it refers to the Listeria bacterium. The same pronoun cannot refer to different nouns in a same clause.

'it' sounds better...

but if you see the meaning of the sentence.. 'while' fits there.
so will go for E.
