Does a CPA license help with mba admissions? [#permalink] New post 28 Jan 2014, 10:56
I am a CPA and most of my CPA colleagues rarely purse an MBA, so with that said, does having a CPA license help with the admissions process or does it hurt your chances?

I switched from accounting to finance a few years ago, hence the reason I want to get an MBA, to gain more knowledge and focus on corporate finance.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

From the information I got from AdCom of one of Ivy's, it depends on your career so far. If you've worked for public accounting, AdCom knows that being CPA is almost mandatory, so it wouldn't help or hurt. But if you've worked in corporate accounting throughout your career, AdCom knows CPA is nowhere near mandatory to corporate accountants, so AdCom would take it as positive.

Yes it helps. Adcoms have routinely said that the most important question for a candidate is "can they handle the academic rigor of an MBA program?"

A CPA helps in supporting that notion, especially if your undergraduate grades are just mediocre.

That being said, adcoms have also told me that CPAs are a dime a dozen in the applicant pool so make sure to not lean on the CPA as a means to distinguish yourself. It's more or less a check box item for adcoms.
