Re: Does a Masters degree get added to work experience? [#permalink]
An application consists of lots of things

1) GMAT
2) Experience
3) Your career growth
4) Your undergrad field
5) Your expertise industry
6) Your country - if you are Indian Male Techie, you are doomed :)
7) Extra Circular Activities - including community service

As of now I would say if all other points look good then 2-3 years is good enough.

You have good 2 years, so I would strongly suggest you to start of with your GMAT - two reasons
1) It consumes a lot of time so finishing it and keeping ti aside will help you on focusing on other stuff to build your resume
2) If you screw up the first time you have time for another try

Hi All,

I am a new member of gmatclub and obviously aspiring to get an MBA degree :!:

My question is pretty much conveyed in the subject of this post. I have a masters degree and 1 yr of work experience.

So will my total work ex be counted as 3 yrs :-D or just 1 yr :(

Thank you for your time.

Welcome to GMAT Club Tarun.

Most schools will consider your master's degree as an educational rather than professional achievement. Moreover, only full time work experience counts.

You will need to beef up your application as the result - perhaps demonstrate that you have either done exceptionally well in your program, or achieved a higher level in your career in 1 year than others have done so in 3. Etc, Etc.

Did the Masters degree have a work component to it?

I met a girl at Duke who had her PhD in a hard science. Since most of the PhD is actual research at the bench, it was counted as work experience.

She hadn't worked at an actual "job" at all.

not necessarily pertinent to the topic....

I have a MS in Accounting and the big4 accounting firms count it as 1 year of work experience when considering your promotion.

so i guess i can show that my n-1 years of work is equivalent to someone elses n years of work as i'm in the same position in the company.

Thank you all for your replies.

Some of you asked me questions regarding my background & MS? I might as well answer those to make it a little more clear.

I am unfortunately an Indian Male Engineer (Mechanical Engg.) as gmanjesh put it  and am working with a mining company. We basically design mining plants and give out the tech info to the clients who inturn give it to a construction company to get it built.

And my Masters included 1 whole year of lab / bench work and owing to that I have 4 conference papers published.

From your replies it seems to be better off having 3 yrs of work exp. + MS so that I can justify my career and growth if I might have any :)

Thanks again to all of you and I hope I can depend on you guys for further questions I might have in the future.

That's my experience as well, although it's worth noting that Duke has an emphasis on health sector/biotech/entrepreneurship. I doubt every school gives as much weight to folks like this -- and it's unlikely that a master's alone or a degree outside hard science would carry as much weight.

Simply having a master's degree will not count at all. However, if you have a master's degree that is somehow relevant to what you hope to do in business school, they may give it some weight. As I mentioned, the places where this might be most relevant is having a highly technical master's if you want to be involved in tech/biotech entrepreneurship or VC. But if you got a master's in something unrelated/non-technical and you're switching careers, no, it won't count for anything.

Hi BB :)

Since this thread is discussing the effects of a Masters degree and you're probably someone who knows most here I thought I'd ask.

I have a second Masters degree, it will obviously be used as an academic qualification and not work experience - What I want to ask is would my previous degree's GPA be used to evaluate me or my Undergrad GPA.

I ask because my undergrad GPA was horrible but I eventually got my act back together and graduated with a really cool MSc GPA from England later.
I have every thing from work experience, to extra curriculars under my belt but my undergrad GPA is really bringing me down.
