Does company matter? [#permalink] New post 16 Oct 2007, 01:24
Does the company that you work for play a role in success of your MBA application? If it does, then to what extend?

For example, if someone works for a top notch company like IBM, Accenture etc and someone in a small company with limited world wide footprint, will this matter?

Please reply.

technator,

People who work for well-known companies have two major advantages over those from many smaller firms: (1) their firm is usually popular among job-seekers so it can be selective in whom it hires, meaning those who are hired may be perceived as being a cut above; (2) because they are well known adcoms may have fewer doubts about the nature of your work and may have positive associations with previous applicants from that company.

That said, if someone from a smaller company exploits their company's smallness and gets more cross-functional experience than is typical and rises higher in his company than the applicant in the well-known firm, then the small-company applicant has largely neutralized the famous-company applicant's advantage. But given two people with the same role and responsibilities, I believe the applicant at the well-known firm has an edge.

Hope this helps
,
