Does mgmat inflates scores for mgmat5 or onwards? [#permalink] New post 29 Dec 2011, 17:12
Hi Experts,

I'm puzzled and thrilled for I scored 760(Q51, V42) in mgmat-5.

Let me give u a summary of my previous scores, which will help you in understanding why I think so:
mgmat1 - 700
Knewton - 710
GmatPrep - 710
PowerPrep1 - 760 I had seen 4-5 CR questions before taking the test, so I assumed that score has inflated by 30-40 marks.
mgmat4 - 670
PowerPrep2 - 730
Today's mgmat5 - 760

As you can see my scores have varied hugely over the last 3weeks and that I never imagined getting a 760 cause I considered mgmat tougher than usual tests.

Anyway, I wanted to understand whether I'm actually doing that good or is it the way mgmat tests are structured?
I'm very relieved today after that 670 debilitating fall; I just hope to do the same or +/-20 on 4th Jan.

No, we don't inflate scores - as you can imagine, that would be bad for our students because then they might expect to get a better score on the real test and, if they didn't, they'd be disappointed! :)

It is possible, though, to artificially inflate your scores yourself, if you do things like skipping the essays, taking longer breaks than normally allowed, eating and drinking during the test, etc.

Why do you think your score jumped from 670 to 760? Was there something that brought the 670 down or something that brought the 760 up? Or both?

For instance, maybe you took the 670 test right after taking another test, after studying for a while and burning yourself out, or maybe you messed up the timing and your score dropped in one or both sections. Or maybe you did something to artificially inflate the 760. Or maybe both - so maybe your "true" scoring level is somewhere in between?

If you messed up the timing at all in the 670 test, that has to be a major priority to fix. If you have timing problems, you can't guarantee that you won't have them again on the real test (unelss you fix them), and you can't hit a really high score with timing problems. This article can help:

Also, in what timeframe did you take those tests? Make sure that you're not taking too many tests all in a row - you can burn yourself out and then have a crash (which is maybe what happened with the 670?) and you don't want that to happen on real test day!

I have not heard anything about score inflation on the MGMAT series of tests, and this would obviously not be the intention. I think you either had a GREAT day, you got questions you knew, or are truly doing a great job learning. I would use it as a motivation boost, but just because you got a 760 on a practice test means nothing for the actual test. Keep studying hard, and if you want your best estimate of what your test day score will be, take the GMATprep 2 test from http://www.mba.com. Good luck!

Thanks a lot GMATLA! I'm a big skeptic; your assurance helped.

You're right the mgmat score itself cannot increase my actual test score but practice can. I'll be taking GMATPrep-2 tomorrow.
