Done with GMAT please help in choosing the colleges [#permalink] New post 02 Feb 2010, 15:39
Hi,

I have taken GMAT in January'10 scored 620(Q48,V28), I know not a good enough score to get the scholarship and a very good college. But I am ready to take Tier 2 colleges and currently I am looking for Manchester Business School, Lancaster, Nanyang (NTU) and National University of Singapore (Actually this were the colleges that I filled up during my exam). Seeing my score I am ready to go around the globe but my only main concern is I want good college if not best. I am thinking of retake but still want to have opinion from you guys.

I am working as IT professional but very much interested in Marketing (1st choice), Finance(2nd choice) and last System/Operations (Please can some explain the difference in this 2 fields)

Here is summary of my resume. Please can anyone comment on this and let me know which colleges I should be applying?

- Worked for 2 years in India and International work experience of 1.5 Years in UK.
- Working for Largest vehicle leasing company known as LEX, in UK on behalf of my employer (An Indian MNC).
Our software is the major factor which has driven LEX to top position in UK.

CAREER PROGRESSION

• Started my career as a trainee and within a year was promoted to a Developer role.
• As a Developer I have delivered very complex batches which automate the system and in a small frame of
time (This also includes the delivery of CCA (Consumer Credit Act) statement, law that was recently enacted
by UK government).
• Have worked with the Vehicle Sales Department and developed an automated system which helped them sell
hundreds of vehicles in few minutes. Was appreciated a lot for this effort.
• Delivered quality of work better than that of the six sigma standard defined for the project with minimal
defects.
• After gaining a good grip on the business flow, was sent on-site just within 2 years and rose very fast from
the role of Developer to Senior Developer.
• Got the opportunity to join and work with the pre-sales team of LEX which markets this vehicle leasing
software.
• Simultaneously playing the role of System Support Analyst whose role is to support /resolve the urgent issues
encountered on the LIVE system. This role demands excellent communication skills and decision making
capability on the spot.
• Always rated high in annual appraisal.
• Also worked with one of largest bank of UK, HBOS. Developed a Share Save schema for the bank employees
and that too with excellent quality.
• Given the responsibility of monitoring the system at the end of every month where millions of pounds of
transactions take place. This role demands in depth knowledge of billing cycle of every customer.

AWARDS/APPRECIATIONS
• Attitude award (‘Fire in the belly’ award for enthusiasm and taking initiative and responsibility at work)
• Received delivery excellence award from HBOS for meeting their requirements.
• Acknowledged heavily by HSBC Vehicle Finance Director for solving their problem of £2 million in just a day.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor in Electronics Engineering with 1st Class (Dont know how to convert this to GPA).
• OCA (Oracle Certified Associate) – 92%

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
• I was working as a part time teacher in an NGO known as Sunshine Kids Back in India.

PERSONAL

• Enjoy Reading, Movies, Intellectual discussions, Paragliding, Cooking, Swimming, gym and interested very
much in knowing about the world’s mega structures.
• Ardent fan of Football especially Barclays Premier League.
• Having seen navy life for major part of my life makes me very discipline, adaptive, adventurous and a never
give up attitude.
• Very fast learner and typically of the attitude of work hard and smart. Always open for new ideas and
discussion and can accept constructive criticism.

Also please let me know if this is unnecessary long or do I need to elaborate on some point.

Thanks a lot....

Sagar-bhau namaskar,

You've already identified your GMAT score as a weak link in your application. So you could consider taking another shot at it, if you have the patience and the inclination.

If you are willing to consider lower ranked schools, there are plenty of them where your current score would also be accepted and I could rattle off a long list if you insisted. But is that really what you want?

Your post-MBA goals seem rather vague at this stage. You'd need to have more clarity before you start applying. Rather than going through a ton of info on the web, if you prefer talking to someone, drop me a PM.

Happy to continue this discussion.
