This is an example of SANAM (some, any, none, all, most) pronouns, that can be singular/plural depending on the context. "Data" is singular, so "any of data" will be singular as well. You can read MGMAT SC for more details.

In this context, data is singular ( I know that data is plural of datum) . However, data can be singular or plural depending on context.

the link confused me.

it says : "If you write for an organization or discipline that insists on the plural count noun usage, pay attention to other words in the sentence that are sensitive to number. "

so is the GMAT a stickler for plural or does it allow leeway for singular usage?

It's like this, certain words can be singular/plural depending on the overall meaning of sentence. So you'll have to take a call based on the context/meaning of the sentence.
