None of them seem right

A: idiom should be just as x, so y
B, C & E seem to have misplaced modifier and D sounds awkward...

It should be A ... B would give the impression that Polio vaccine is also needed to protect those susceptible to the life- threatening effects of press eating habits ... Whereas here it is only used as an analogy ...

Really terribly tough one.......what's the source? doesn't adhere to the rules, so when you choose the option, you just have to pick what you think is the best of the lot using only what you know.

I'd have gone with C if it were a real test, suspiciously though. "which" does not have a preceding comma, and so the extra information presentation is bad.

A on the other hand is a terrible idiom - Just as X, so Y is the correct idiom. The given sentence is undiomatic. Although, there's a rule that "Just as" can be replaced with "in the same way that", using "so" makes the sentence clearer.

D evidently is wrong, the intent is twisted, "while" is replaceable with "as long as" in this particular context.

B is wrong as well, "...that like..." sounds horrendous on the ears.

E is hopelessly wrong because of the gerund "the giving".

Because, I'd strongly eliminate A, B, D and E with the above reasons, I'd have gone with C.

This is not an idiom question, IMO.

The sentence relates the giving of polio vaccine to mass dietary change action.

B is wrong because the sentence would then compare the polio vaccine itself to a mass dietary action which is incorrect.
C is wrong for the same reason.

A is right because it compares action for action, not a product to an action.

Can anyone explain why E is wrong?? I think its gerund form "the giving" is not a reason as gerund can act as a noun.

BTW, can "similar to" compare two clauses?? Or it can compare nouns only? (as "like" does)

Thanks!

Noboru,

I read Ron Purewal's reply on the MGMAT forum. He says "just so" is correct.
(btw Ron Purewal = MGMAT instructor)

In this SC we are comparing two actions
1.giving polio vaccine to prevent blah blah
2. Bringing mass dietary to change to protect
Hope this helps.

+1 A

B is wrong because it changes the meaning. We could understand that poliio vaccine is needed also to provide a good diet to people.
