Driving out to Cornell... [#permalink]
23 Oct 2006, 03:00
Driving out to Cornell from the Boston area today was beautiful. I am from NH. People think NH is rural... Let me tell ya, not so much! NY State is much more rural than NH. Aside from our Great North Woods up by Canada, NH is practically a metropolis compared to the Catskills and the Adrondacks. You come thru the Catskills on I-88 if you drive from Boston to Cornell. Its really beautiful though. Deep valleys drenched in sun between the mnts. I also had an opportunity to more really look at the courses on Cornell's website tonight. I visited Yale back in the spring of last year. While I enjoyed Yale's course on equities analysis... I gotta say that the offerings relative to investment management at Cornell are much more extensive than Yale. In light of this fact I am thinking of dropping Yale from my list.

I'd like to visit Cornell, but am withholding that visit until/if I get an interview.
Speaking of which, anyone know if the interviews are on campus or off?

Mine is on campus (clearly) but I have no idea if they just did that because I was in the Northeast or something... Not that I am that close... 7hrs is certainly no small drive in my book.

I really can't see them not giving you one... But I gotta go get ready and head out there now for a day at Cornell... I will report my findings tonight or tomorrow morning... Depending on just how late and how tired I am when I get back to NH.

Question for the Cornell applicants - how did your format your essays since they had to be entered in on the online form? Double spaced or no?

Cornell was nice. Not sure quite how well or not well the interview went as my interview wanted me to be a bit more scripted than I wanted to be and we at least once tumbled over each other... But the Class Visit/Information Session/lunch were fantastic. The students at Cornell were insanely nice... Like completely unbelievably nice! They were great. I saw a strategy class. From my CFA/econ experience it wasn't too deep for me and they let me participate a bit. It was cool... I asked about the Park Scholarship thingy. The admissions guy at the desk said "let me pull up your file" and then pulled back a bit and said "oh... you are definately getting an email, you certainly fit the eligablity." I was worried about my verbal/quant GMAT balance... But I met at least one guy there who got into both Dartmouth and of course Cornell and had a much worse quant score but simmilar verbal. Being a US Citizen I am of course eligible for the Park thing so I am awaiting the email egerly so I can bang out the essay the second I get it. They were all shocked when I said it was the only school I applied to. But come on... with a Nov 17th notification there is plenty of time to do something else depending on what you hear from Cornell. I told them they were remarkably efficent. Regardless, point is that everyone was great and the students seemed to think my profile was much better than I did... which is after all very reassuring!

Hi Mark,
Who was your interview with....Jennifer??? I interviewed last week and it seemed to go well....now it's just a waiting game. Had a 2nd Year sit in...think he was training to be an interviewer for later rounds.
Michael in the admissions office has been incredibly helpful!!! He's a great resource for applicants.

I had Michelle. Is Michael the guy at the desk? He was quite nice. He was the one who said that I should be receiving the park email soon.

Yeah...Michael is @ the desk in Rm. 111. He's usually one of the people you speak with if you give them a call.

Yeah...I live in Ithaca and have met with many folks from Johnson (both professors & students) and everyone has been extremely nice and willing to help. There really is an egalitarian culture which pervades the school, moreso than some of the other places I'm applying.
What immersion are you interested in?
I had a meeting the day you were here....otherwise we could have met up and grabbed dinner.

Rhyme requested some pics....
There are plenty of pictures of Cornell on the website....so here are a few from Buttermilk Falls, about 5 minutes from campus. It's been a beautiful Fall up here.
