Today, companies must navigate through complex and interdependent issues. They must deal with health and security matters, environmental impact questions, and diversity and cultural concerns. Leaders need adaptability, imagination, emotional intelligence, and business acumen. Thus, Duke is in the midst of an ambitious global venture that will embed and connect us around the world, and we are seeking future leaders of consequence, who value diversity and collaborative leadership, and who aspire to impact the companies and communities of which they are a part in a lasting and positive way.

In an effort to identify, engage, and foster the development of future leaders of consequence, the Admissions Committee would like to get to know our applicants in a more holistic manner. We would like to know who you are, what has shaped you into the person you are today, and how you hope to impact both Duke and the communities of which you will be a part in the future. The essays are your opportunity to convey that to us. Please be open, genuine, and passionate. Share with us what makes you a dynamic, multi-dimensional person.

Essay 1: Describe your vision for your career and your inspiration for pursuing this career path.
Essay 2: How will your background, values, and non-work activities enhance the experience of other Duke MBA students and add value to Fuqua's diverse culture?
Essay 3: Why Duke? (If you are interested in a specific concentration, joint degree, clubs or activities, please discuss how you would contribute to these in this essay.)

Curriculum – Notable Features

Global Knowledge
Quote:
The Duke MBA program begins with a three-week Global Institute held in August. The institute features two core courses: Leadership, Ethics and Organizations; and Global Institutions and Environments. The Global Institute begins the process of helping you become a collaborative leader with a deep understanding of the multifaceted global business environment.

You will also have multiple opportunities to experience business and cultural practices in other countries through Global Academic Travel Experience (GATE) courses and exchange programs.

Global Academic Travel Experience (GATE)
Quote:
Global Academic Travel Experience (GATE) courses are three credit elective courses. Students study the business, culture, economy, and politics of a country or region for 6 weeks before traveling to the area studied. The travel portion of the course is typically about 12 days in length.

Students gain exposure to international businesses through visits to multinational corporations, local enterprises, government agencies, exchange program partner schools, alumni and others in the region.

Health Sector Management Program
Quote:
Daytime Health Sector Management (HSM) certificate: *Click for detailed curriculum, extracurriculum, and career opportunities.
  • Immerses students in leading-edge health care education as part of Fuqua's Daytime MBA core curriculum.
  • Offers insight into the interaction and interdependencies of health-related industries and organizations.
  • Hones functional skills and the ability to think strategically in a global business environment, allowing the immediate application of new-won knowledge and skills.
  • Prepares students for management and/or leadership roles in a variety of health arenas, including pharmaceutical; medical device; consulting; banking; venture capital; entrepreneurial; biotechnology, research and development; and payor and health systems.
  • Builds and/or enhances a network of contacts worldwide.

Design
As part of this two-year, fulltime program, HSM students fulfill all regular Daytime MBA requirements; HSM courses count toward the required MBA elective credits. The HSM curriculum is flexible, allowing students to combine their interest in health care with additional concentrations of interest within The Duke MBA program. Concurrently, HSM cultivates collaborative learning opportunities with other noted Duke programs, including engineering, basic science, public policy and medicine, as well as with leading healthcare companies and organizations across the globe.

Class profile
HSM is suited for students seeking to enhance their functional skills and overall understanding of the health care industry. Enrolled students come from a wide variety of professional, academic, and cultural backgrounds. In general:
  • Students have an average of five years of professional experience.
  • Approximately half have worked in health care.
  • Approximately 25 percent have advanced degrees.
  • One quarter to one third are international students.

Certificate of Academic Excellence in Finance
Quote:
The Certificate of Academic Excellence in Finance distinguishes Duke MBA–Daytime students who focus in the discipline and attain excellent grades in finance courses. To earn the certificate, you must take at least twelve finance-related electives beyond core finance courses--and six credits beyond those required to receive the MBA. This corresponds to a dual finance concentration in corporate finance and investments plus an extra finance and non-finance elective.

Joint and Dual Degree Programs
  • MBA/JD
  • MBA/MD
  • MBA/M. Environmental Management (MEM)
  • MBA/M. Forestry (MF)
  • MBA/M. Public Policy (MPP)
  • MBA/M.S. Nursing (MSN)

Would anybody know what Fuqua's criteria is for GMAT retakers? I'm considering a 4th attempt currently, and want to be sure that they will consider only my higherst score if my score drops.

Sorry to say, but the latest score is accepted by the school, regardless its the highest or lowest.

Hi Aximili85,

I am extremely sorry for the info I provided above. Actually, Duke like other business schools accept the highest gmat score and not the latest one. There was a misunderstanding at my part.

My apologies again.

Guys, do you know how Fuqua managed to rise so substantially in business week's ranking? I realize that Duke is an excellent school, but I can't explain to myself how can such schools as Sloan, Haas and Tuck be lower than Fuqua?

Business week is sometimes different from others but Fuqua has been consistent in the top 10 over the last 5-10 years. However, I too would doubt such high ranking esp taking into consideration the more remote location of the school (not as bad as Tuck though). I would see that being a tougher proposition for job and internship search (since few of them can be in Durham)

Good question. I highly doubt it though. You have to register using their scheduling tool, and I'm quite sure that online info sessions dont figure in the list.
More info on the fee reduction available here: http://www.fuqua.duke.edu/programs/duke ... ation_fee/

Thank you so much. It's actually indicated within the online application that virtual sessions don't count for fee reduction.

Thanks for the update. I've updated the stats, and will be adding a few more details to the report over the course of this month. Please do let me know if there's anything that's amiss or that you feel would be worth including.

The Duke MBA—Daytime Health Sector Management (HSM)

Can anybody shed light on what key points differentiate Duke's MBA HSM degree from other top B-school healthcare dual offerings?

Say for example Berkeley Haas' dual degree? If one was to apply for the HSM and adcom asks you, well why not Haas or all the other MBA's that offer a Healthcare specialization, what would one say? Would really appreciate others thoughts on this topic.
Regards
A.
