Linda-

I've recently been doing a good bit of research on Duke's Fuqua School of Business and have been impressed by the team-oriented atmosphere and collegial "feel" the school seems to have.

I've read a few articles that have bashed Fuqua, saying that it has inflated its way up the rankings, "gamed" the system, and as such isnt really a Top 10 program.

What are your thoughts on the program? The alums I have spoken to, combined with the friendliness of the admissions office, has given me a good impression....but this is obviously only one side of the coin.

Thanks.

Hi,

Duke is one of the elite MBA programs by virtually any measure. I have heard criticisms of various schools along similar lines that School X had inflated its rank and that its presence among the top schools was somehow unjustified. In general, I patiently listen to these allegations then ask the commentator for some supporting evidence. In addition, I would consider the source of the allegations very carefully since these stories often have a provenance reminiscent of an urban legend (my girlfriend’s cousin’s best friend knows the hairdresser of the guy who said that his friend overheard it from some guy who works in the Dean’s office . . .).

I think that many would agree that the general reputation of this particular school does not rise to the level of the reputations of schools like Stanford, Chicago, or Penn. Nonetheless, I would have to question someone who claimed that Duke was not perceived to be among the elite MBA programs in terms of general reputation.

I have heard wonderful things about the comraderie and program at Fuqua. At the same time, the key question isn't ranking, what the people I talk to say, or what the people you talk to say; it's post-MBA opportunity. Check out the recruiting stats at Fuqua for the kind of job you would like to have post-MBA. If Fuqua grads are obtaining those jobs and you like Fuqua's famed team atmosphere, then it sounds like you should apply there. If those kinds of jobs are not available to Fuqua grads, then it doesn't sounds like a good idea.

Good luck!
