I almost went for B.But C is better than E since it is in the active voice which is prefferable to passive one.

C is right...Use of two modifiers at the start of the sentence in E is incorrect.

C should be a straightforward choice because of correct use of modifier.

C. seems C even though it has help + to, which is almost always incorrect in gmat.

you mean it should be helped rescue? I think it makes sense. So, helped to rescue is always wrong?

you mean it should be helped rescue? I think it makes sense. So, helped to rescue is always wrong?

I dont think there is a rule as such...it depends on the context of the sentence.

E makes it sound as if the Native Americans had intimate knowledge of the ecology of the land only during the early years of European settlement.

D and E do not seem right. They are confusing in their meansing. Newcomers are being confused by Americans. Who has intimate knowledge?

Between B and C, I go for C. B is wordy "Enabled them to help in the rescue of "..

I go for C.
