C is correct
always prefer a noun over gerund, ' knowledge ' is prefferrable over knowing, A and E are gone.
B sounds awkward.
C is precise and takes care of modifiers correctly in such a long sentence.

Which is better E or C?
I personally felt E since no seperation of subject and verb C is my choice. If you take out the dependent clause and read the whole sentence, it still makes sense. E seems to have misplaced modifiers by moving native Americans to the end and placing knowing right after newcomers

I personally felt E since no seperation of subject and verb I chose C. After "during....newcomers," you need a Subject "Native Americans" to start the main clause. E puts the Subject too far away.

E seems to have misplaced modifiers by moving native Americans to the end and placing knowing right after newcomers Exactly !!! we should read the complete sentence to get to the answer thoiugh i did not do this !! so got E now funda is .. we always think subject verb should as close as possible ,hence E seems correct as in it says NA helped to rescue where as C disobeys saying : NA,....,helped to rescue !!! but if we go for E then newcomers ,knowing about the land,NA helped ..... is the modifier with newcomers or NA ....ambiguity ->GMAT poison !! hence OUT Only C sounds logical !!! OA is C thanks guys !!!great posting !!!
