I choose
[Reveal] Spoiler:

Assuming you are stuck between A and E.. and have eliminated BCE on strong reasons...

In (E) mining and building are certainly parallel but the problem is the clause following both these nouns...usually when we say we need something, we follow the action (secondary verb, here build and carry, remember the primary verb of the clause is 'were needed' and 'needed') with an infinitive 'to' and not 'for', thats the correct idiom...moreover the last part of the sentence is really awkward when you combine the underlined and rest of the sentence....'....that was needed for carrying of large pieces of machinery across the country'

does it help?

Thanks a lot Akhil. It does. I didn't look at it from the idioms standpoint.

Hi Karishma, Verbal Forum Moderators.

Can you please provide your solution on this one. I have the same doubt as yuvrajsub had.
I think E should be the answer because -
1. The list talk about same topic.
2. E makes the list structurally parallel.

Hi Honey86,

Answer A is correct based on the parallelism concept.
Firstly lets divide the question into parts :
During the industrial revolution - A modifier (omit it )

most of the government stimulus money was spent - main part of the sentence and it has two dependent clause :
1) on mining industrial metals that were needed to build heavy machinery
and
2) on building the infrastructure needed to carry large pieces of machinery across the country.

Rest the sentence does not have any errors.

Taking option E --- "needed for carrying" is unidiomatic and hence incorrect.
