E... the reason was said to be El Nino... as in El Nino is the reason.

it seems like A would say:

the reason was said to be caused by El Nino...

i think A would be more appropriate if the sentence wasn't talking about "the reason".

C looks correct..but I am taking risk and choosing B.

A, D and E are wordy.

My initial reaction was to lean toward C, but then I realized that B and C are both in the same boat, and neither one of them is really better than the other. Plus, Paul wouldn't post a SC unless it was counter-intuitive

I think this SC plays a trick on the ear. It is the reason that's the subject here, hence only E makes sense. You don't blame or attribute a reason to someting, but "a reson...said to be El Nino" makes sense.

E could change the meaning of the sentence. Between B and C, I think C is much better.

OA is E! Nice Sige and Iatoshka.
OE: Since the words the reason appear earlier in the sentence, choices A through D are all redundant; each somehow refers to the concept of cause and effect, which is already included in the word reason. Choice E is logical: "the reason... was said to be El Nino".
