It doesn't necessarily have to be management roles in your company. That's the most obvious thing that they look for, but they definitely also value leadership experiences anywhere. To make up an example, you don't regularly lead/manage a team at work, but maybe you regularly lead fund-raising events for your church. Schools look for people who take initiative and lead others, even if it's not part of their regular job description.
