I get D.

Average spent per student = $60 Total spent by 6 students =$60*6 = $360 X+Y =$360 - $300 =$60

1: sufficient
X = 2Y
X + Y = 3Y = $60 Y =$20
X = $40 2: sufficient X = Y +$20
X + Y = Y + $20 + Y = 2Y +$20 = $60 Y =$20
X = $40 Senior Manager Joined: 19 Mar 2008 Posts: 354 Followers: 1 Kudos [?]: 28 [0], given: 0 Re: DS [#permalink] 25 Jul 2008, 06:04 Each of six students, four girls and two boys, spent an average of$60 on books. g = total spending by 4 girls
x= spending by X
y= spending by Y

x + y + g = 360
g = 300
x+y = 60

(1) alone suffiient

(2) alone sufficient

Ans is D
