Either Perry’s faction or Tucker’s faction, but not both, will win control of the government. If Perry’s faction wins, the nation will suffer economically. If Tucker’s faction wins, the nation will suffer militarily.
Given the statements in the passage, which one of the following statements must be true?
(A) It is possible, but not certain, that the nation will neither suffer economically nor suffer militarily.
(B) If the nation suffers economically, it is certain that Perry’s faction has won control of the government.
(C) It is certain that the nation will suffer either economically or militarily, and also certain that it will not suffer both.
(D) If the nation suffers militarily, it is possible, but not certain, that Tucker’s faction has won control of the government.
(E) If the nation suffers both economically and militarily, it is certain that neither Perry’s faction nor Tucker’s has won control of the government.

I would go with "D".
Basic assumptions :
1. Either of these 2 factions would win.
2. Perry's faction => Certain economic suffering. maybe military suffering.
3. Tucker's faction => Certain military suffering, maybe economic suffering.
A. Since either of the factions are going to gain control of govt, one suffering is assured. False.
B. Perry's faction's control ensures economic suffering, but Tucket's faction could cause economic suffering too (which is not ruled out). False.
C. That the nation would not suffer militarily when Perry's faction wins and that the nation would not suffer economically when Tucker's faction win is not assured. False.
D. True. Military suffering would definitely caused by Tucker's faction and maybe by Perry's. So from knowing that the nation suffered militarily, we cannot definitely say who won.
E. Violates our assumption #1. False.
Please post differing viewpoints. Thanks.

D) !
because "If Tucker’s faction wins then the nation will suffer militarily" is not equal to "If the nation will suffer militarily then Tucker’s faction won". so the cause (=>tucker) for the suffering is possible but not certain. there may be other factors (=>cuts of the budget) that caused the suffering of the military.

"D"....nothing is certain in the statement other than if A wins, then X happens, if B wins, then Y happens. All other choices are talking abt certainities that don't exist.

Parry/Tucker will win control of governemtn
Perry --> will suffer economically
Tucker --> Will suffer militarily
(A) It is possible, but not certain, that the nation will neither suffer economically nor suffer militarily.
- No. One of two events (econmic/military) will occur
(B) If the nation suffers economically, it is certain that Perry’s faction has won control of the government.
- Not for sure. Tucker's faction could suck at economics too
(C) It is certain that the nation will suffer either economically or militarily, and also certain that it will not suffer both.
- don't know what this answer choice means. One side it says for certain 1 or 2 events will take place, the other side it says for certain both events will not occur.
(D) If the nation suffers militarily, it is possible, but not certain, that Tucker’s faction has won control of the government.
- yes. It is possible the nation will suffer, but not definite.
(E) If the nation suffers both economically and militarily, it is certain that neither Perry’s faction nor Tucker’s has won control of the government.
- Out.
D it is

D for sure
P wins --> suffer economically
but
suffer economically --> P may or may not win.
T wins -->suffer militarily
but
suffer militarily -->T may or may not win.

I would go for D.
This statement stands true because the nation could suffer militarily even if Tucker's faction has not won control of the government.
