Either restrictions must be placed on freedom of speech or certain subversive elements in society will use it to destroy this country. Since to allow the latter to occure is unconscionable, we must restrict freedom of speech.

The conclusion above is unsound because:
A) subversives do not in fact wan to destroy the country
B) the author places too much importance on the freedom of speech
C) the author fails to consider an accomodation between the two alternatives
D) the meaning of "freedom of speech" has not been defined
E) subversives are a true threat to our way of life

This is an example of the False Dichotomy Fallacy. The author fails to consider a solution between the two alternatives mentioned => C.

In a false dichotomy you are presented with two choices, when in fact there are more than two choices. If one choice is discredited, then the reader is forced to accept the other choice. But this is not an adequate argument, the choice favored must be supported by evidence.

Examples:

"If today is not Tuesday, it must be Wednesday."

So it's C.
