D. be releasing the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already.
E. release the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already released it.

+1 for 'E'. It is the case of parallel construction. in 2nd part of the sentence (from original), it is not clear what they have not already? so A, B, C, D out.
Any suggestion on above?

Election officials should release the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already.

A. release the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already. Have is a helping verb and it should be followed with a main verb.
B. release the result tomorrow morning, if not already. clause has no verb. incomplete and hence incorrect.
C. have released the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already. - the verb is present perfect..the action is already taken place and there is Tomorrow..Its incorrect combination of past and future words.
D. be releasing the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already. Incorrect verb form
E. release the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already released it. This is best of all. Present tense + complete 2nd clause

However I have a question here. " if they have not already done so" would have been much better.

If we had 2 choices here one with "IT" and the other with "so" how to choose between It and so?

Hi there,
Let me first present the analysis of the answer choices here.

A. release the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already: Incorrect. Here is the case of ellipsis. The verb to come after “have” is “released”. However, this word is not present in this form anywhere in the sentence. The word present in the sentence is “release” which cannot be kept understood.

B. release the result tomorrow morning, if not already. Incorrect. The “if” clause cannot have "should release" or just "release" as verb.

C. have released the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already. Incorrect. “should have released” is not the correct verb to use with “tomorrow”.

D. be releasing the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already. Incorrect. Same error as in choice A.

E. release the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already released it. Correct.

If any of the choices had “it” then it would have been incorrect. “it” is a pronoun and can only refer to a noun or another pronoun. “it” cannot refer to any action. If the answer choice read:

release the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already done it: This choice would be incorrect because “it” is now referring to “released” which is a verb. A pronoun cannot refer to a verb.

If the choice had “so” instead of “it” then it would have been a correct answer.

So always remember, use only "so" to replace a verb, mostly after do/did/done/doing. Never use "it" to refer to an action.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
Shraddha

Thanks Shraddha.
It means both the statements will be correct - if they have not already released it / if they have not already done so

Hi Shraddha,

Is already necessary in option E,

because"if they have not released it" already conveys the same meaning as does "if they have not already released it"---i eliminated option E because i thought option E was wordy.

Its a case of IF......... THEN constn in reverse order

we need to check 2 things in the ans options : Should and the base form of the verb in the Then clause

lets do a vertical scan by reversing/rewriting the options

If the officials (They ) have not released it ( Result ) , (THEN-- Implied ) Officials should release the result tomorrow

E fits the bill perfectly.

IMO E

It is correct type 1 conditional

future/imperative/can/may/might/must/should/could + present bare infinitive,
if + present simple/present cont./present perfect/present perfect cont.

Could anyone please explain why ellipsis is not working in B?

B. release the result tomorrow morning, if .............. not already ...............
E. release the result tomorrow morning, if they have not already released it.

Couldn't we take the missing words of B as understood?

Rule: In a Comparison Sentence, whenever there is a change in the tense of the Verb, the Verb should always be mentioned in the correct tense. This rule is optional when the Verb is a linking verb (am,is are, was, were, has been, have been, had been etc)

Applying this rule. 'E' is the only option that accounts for the change in tense.

E. release (verb) the result tomorrow morning (Future tense), if they have not already released (Verb in Past tense) it.
