Entrepreneurship Programs [#permalink] New post 15 Jun 2004, 09:46
Hi Linda-

I was wondering if you had any information about the top MBA Entrepreneurship programs? I already know a good deal about the Cornell program (I took classes there as an undergrad). I'm particularly interested in those at Harvard and Wharton, but would also like to know about those offered at any of these schools:

Tuck
Duke
MIT
Columbia

Are there any good resources you have for this type of information? The university websites dont appear to go into too much detail about the programs...but only focus on a few specific courses offered.

Also - is it uncommon for applicants to contact professors in their area of interest to gain more information?

Thanks.

Harvard and Wharton are well-regarded for entrepreneurship. Tuck's strong general management approach would certainly benefit a would-be entrepreneur as would its two-hours-from-Boston location, but entrepreneuship is not what Tuck is known for. Duke, MIT, and CBS are known for entrepreneurship with MIT probably being the best of the three in this area.

Also consider UT, UCLA, and USC. All programs strong in entrepreneurship. It would be a mistake to apply exclusively to the toughest MBA programs so include some program outside the top ten.

It is hard to obtain solid data. Program reputation can be gauged by the rankings for specific specialties. The rankingsare a good place to start your research, but as I have said many times, a terrible place to end it. Then study the entrepreneuship curriculum at the different schools. Which one do appeals to you most? Try to contact students or recent alumni at the school interested in entrepreneurship. Are they happy? What do they like and dislike?

It is somewhat unusual for applicants to contact professors, but that doesn't mean it itsn't a good idea. Do your research to find to find out which is the best MBA program for you.

Good luck!
