Equal amount of water were poured into 2 empty jars of diff [#permalink] New post 04 Feb 2008, 19:10
Equal amount of water were poured into 2 empty jars of diff capacities, which made one jar 1/4 full and the other jar 1/3 full. if the water in the jar with the lesser capacity is then poured into the jar with the greater capacity, what fraction of the larger jar will be filled with water ?

1. 1/7
2. 2/7
3. 1/2
4. 7/12
5. 2/3

My approach in such problems would be pick numbers:

Equal amount( I am taking 10 Ltrs) of water were poured into 2 empty jars of diff capacities, which made one jar 1/4(full capacity 40 Ltrs) full and the other jar 1/3(30 Ltrs) full. if the water in the jar with the lesser capacity(30 Ltrs) is then poured into the jar with the greater capacity(40 Ltrs), what fraction of the larger jar will be filled with water (10+10 Ltrs in the 40 Ltrs capacity)?

thus it would be 1/2
