If a/x + b/y = a/2 + b/3 , then what is the value of x and y?

Dear GMATTERs, I know that the question above is not at all gmat type, but i cant find the values of x and y mathematically, though it is clearly seen that x and y equal 2 and 3 alternately.

I think the term you should use is "the question clearly forms an illusion that x and y are 2 and 3 respectively".
If a = b, then x can be 3 and y can be 2.
If a = 2b, then x and y can be 6 and 1 or in fact can take several values
If a = b = 0, then x and y can be any number other than 0 and the equation would still hold true.

The reason that this cannot be mathematically solved is because it is NOT clearly seen from the equation that x and y are 2 and 3.

Let me add one more thing here:

If you are a little confused about the question, put some values to figure out. Often, using some examples, things will become very clear.

Say if a = 2 and b = 3,

2/x + 3/y = 2

Now is there any confusion whether you can find the values of x and y?
