Hi,

For all the essays in the application there is a maximum word limit but what should be the minimum number of words I should submit, i.e. for an essay with a maximum word limit of 500 words, is it too bad to submit an essay with 450 words?

Not at all. As long as you're within 10% (less), you should be fine. If you're at 400 words, then you probably want to fill some more stuff in. If at 450 you're completely happy with it, be content and off to the next :-D
