Essay Mistakes Engineers/Techies Make, Pt 2: That Tech-talk!

“I successfully contained contamination marginalities and stabilized vector variations according to MISK protocol.”

Huh?
What?

That may make sense to engineers and techies, but for most admissions essay readers, you might as well have been speaking in a language from Mars.

Don’t forget a simple, tremendously important key point: you’re applying to business school! Most admissions officers may not be able to make heads or tails of your tech jargon, so make sure to speak in layman’s terms (language that the everyday person can understand).

Your word choice in the essays matters greatly. If you come across simply as a techie trying to go to business school, rather than as a young business leader who is working in the engineering/ tech/ manufacturing arena, you will hurt your cause. You may not yet have formal business training, but your essays and recommendations should present you as an outstanding leader who is working in the engineering/ tech/ manufacturing arena, and who has much to contribute in a business setting.

So, in your essays and application form, tune down the tech-talk, and increase the time you spend talking about the business, interpersonal and leadership skills that have allowed you to bring success in the workplace. Make sure your recommendation writers do the same!

Take-away: Minimize your tech talk and emphasize the skills that have allowed you to achieve success.

I hope that helps you in the admissions process!

Best wishes,
Shelly Watts
