essay on ethical dilemma(michigan) [#permalink]

Michigan has this for an essay:

Describe a time when your personal ethics or values were a consideration as you resolved a dilemma.

Is it ok to write this - a colleague of mine who was also a good friend modified/cheated on his work to make himself(and hence our group) look more 'presentable'. But I was not ok with this..etc etc..i believe in honesty..etc..and this was a dilemma..so i sat down with him and corrected his actions, imploring him to be ethical..etc..eventually he did the right thing by changing the results on his work..

this is just a small draft but wondering if this meets the answer criteria or am i going haywire?

Yes, I think this is absolutely a good story! The best stories are the ones that aren't simply black-and-white, but are more grey and less easy to judge. In this case, you could have just let him do what he did, and pretend that you were ignorant. His altered work would have made you look better. But you didn't just look the other way. You did the harder thing and confronted your friend, which shows character and ethics. Good!

How about this?

I am in international sales in book publishing, where we sell thousands of books. obviously I don't nec. agree with the message that all these books send, etc. but I realize the value in letting people decide that for themselves.

However, recently there was one book called "creating a secret identity", which actually instructs a person how to create false documents to obtain real ones. I was extremely against this, especially in this day and age where terrorism is so abundant. Yes, I realize that if someone really wanted this information they can go on the internet and get it, yet I had a very hard time facilitating what could be potential terrorists in creating secret identities.

I brought this up to my managers and we are not going to sell it overseas.

Could this be a good example?

I think this is a great example. Definitely a grey area and you had to find your ground on. You stood your ground and can feel great about the result. I also like how you mentioned the fact that there are some books that you don't completely agree with, but that you don't want to contribute to screening books based on your opinion. However, when it came to assisting others in "illegal activities" you put your foot down. Nice.
