Essays - extracurricular activities [#permalink]
18 Jan 2007, 02:59
Hi,
Writing my essay and trying to show the best side of myself, I would like to know what you say about your personal life. I know it is very appreciated to be a chess master, a permanent member of a charity organisation etc.
In my case, I don't have such profile. I don't do sport(only during hollidays : scuba diving, sailing...), and don't have social activities(only bars, diners etc.) and don't have reasons to justify this lack of commitment. I work but could do something besides.
Some of the factors are maybe that I'm a bit lazy, that I have a long-distance relationship(every week-ends, we have to travel by train/car) for 4 years now, that I moved pretty much for my work . Don't have many other reasons.
On the other hand, I traveled a lot and have much intercultural experience + languages.
Concerning you, are you honest or do you amplify/create stories about your success outside work? When I read this forum, I have the feeling that everyone here is very active, passionate, generous...

talk about your love of travel, exploring new experiences, cultures and communities (you can tie that back to the MBA easily)
I never realised that spending a summer cleaning WW2 war graves when I was 17 would come in quite so handy. Really - dig for things you have done. I thought mine would be awful, but then remembered I was a subeditor at the student newspaper, Entertainments committee member for a Union, etc etc. Don't push it too hard, but you will remember bits you did as you look back.

I wonder if extra-curriculars are at all geographic. I think Putnam's Bowling Alone might cover this, but I read it too long ago to remember. But I wonder if some cultures produce more "joiners" than others. Nous les americains are definitely joiners, in spite of recent declines documented by Putnam. I don't remember any data on les francais, but when i was living there, my friends certainly didn't tend to join groups or even do much community service. And if there ARE regional variations in "joinerdom," I wonder if the adcoms are aware of them and take it into account?[/u]
