Some good advice all around.

Or I could go for a sight-gag and before dinner empty my wallet but just put one penny in it, so then when the check comes I'll be like, "Don't worry everybody, dinners on me." Then I open my wallet and go, "Oh no, you're not going to believe this," and turn it upside down so the single penny falls and bounces on the table. Then people would think I'm really generous even though I don't end up paying.

Yes, but then they'll say that you could go back and wash all the dishes.
