Evaluate my profile - MBA vs. EMBA [#permalink] New post 23 Aug 2011, 05:48
Hello - I would appreciate if you could evaluate my profile and let me know what is the best option (MBA vs. EMBA) for me to meet my career goal.

Background:

1> 33/M from India. After completing my Masters I have been working in US

2> GMAT: I haven't GMAT yet, but I am confident I can get 700+ in GMAT

3> 9+ years of experience in IT (esp. managing Oracle ERP implementation). 5 years with GE as Finance Systems Leader. One year with Accenture as Manager - Oracle ERP. Currently, I am working as Principal (Oracle Functional) in Computer Sciences Corporation. Excellent managerial experience.

4> Masters in Computer Engineering from Florida International University with GPA 3.46

5> Led many volunteering events

Target Schools: Columbia, Wharton, Kellogg's, Booth

Post-MBA Career Goal: Career switch to purely Strategy Consulting. If I do MBA, the biggest challenge I see in my profile is my age and years of experience. However, if I do EMBA, can I switch careers?

Appreciate if you could evaluate my profile for MBA vs EMBA?

Thanks!

Hello gbose, thanks for your question.

As you probably know, there is no ideal answer, but I do not think applying to EMBA programs as a career changer is a good idea. As I told another applicant, an EMBA is not the place to “hit the reset button” on your career.

Some top tier programs, such as Wharton and Booth, are more open to older candidates. Moreover, to be safe, you might consider applying to slightly lower ranked programs that would be glad to have strong candidates. Regardless, I think a full-time MBA program would likely be a better path for you to transition to strategy consulting.

Best of luck!
Brian
