Hi,

Thanks for your advice in advance - I really appreciate the service your providing. Looking to apply in 2009 to start school in 2010.

Following is my profile :

Female, 24, (will be 25 in fall 09)
Nationality - Indian (Singapore Permanent Resident)
GMAT : 730 (took it in Nov 08)

Education : Undergrad in Singapore, Computer Engineering - First Class honours & Deans List all years (should translate to 3.9 to 4.0)
Full scholarship from the Singapore Government for undergrad.

Extra Curricular in school :
1. Head Girl of my school - elected by a student & teacher population of 1000. Leadership from a young age, led school contingents to victor in inter school debate,elocution,sport and cultural events

Extra Curricular in University :
1. President of the Entrepreneurship Club - Defined a new direction for the club towards broader arenas.. and involved youth from diverse schools, .. interacted with many entrepreneurs..raised student participation in the club via creative marketing in university
This led to an active involvement in an international Social Entrepeneurship movement that fosters entrepreneurship as a means of development. and poverty alleviation.. ., (SIFE).. represented Singapore, and placed second in an international competitions beating teams from 15-20 countries...
Led working teams of 30+ people to organize various events throughout the year

2. Vice President of University Debating Squad : Trained and mentor junior debaters to improve their skills to compete at international tournaments. Focused on increasing participation and skills of women debaters who were under represented. Led squad to organize tournaments and events throughout the year.

3. Debating : Represented university at debating tournaments across Asia,Australia & Europe. Part of a contingent of 15 debaters chosen form a student population of 20000+ , to represent the university at such tournaments. Won accolades

4. Writer for the college newspaper
5. Represented dorm in badminton
6. Volunteered for six months at a home for children from low income houses..teaching them maths,English and mentoring them on future plans,career development tc

7. 6 month internship at Merril Lynch in application development.


Work Ex : Will be 4 years in dec 2009.

1.Working in a oil major(fortune top 5) as a territory manager(1.8 yrs) managing 25 Retail petrol stations across Singapore across areas of sales,profitability operation etc. Led 25 franchisees who operated the stations on a daily basis and delivered through others. Chosen from a team of 4 managers to work with the global marketing teams to develop marketing,loyalty campaigns suited to the Singapore market. Led numerous projects individually nd delivered. Organised product launches and let workstreams.

Due to a merger my role was re-orgnaised within the firm and i was chosen to join the petrochemicals business in another sales & marketing role iwth a B2B focus instead of B2C, in a senior role as compared to my previous one.

For the last 1.5 years been sales executive / trader for commodity and specialty petrochemicals for growing new market- India. & also Philippines .handling profits in excess of 10 million. Responsibilities have grown rapidly..no direct reports, but manage many national level distributors and contractors..Lead many projects within the company amongst a team of 10 other sales executives..coached newer team members
Consistently rated as best performer amongst peers and rated as high potential within the organization..have been promoted once and expect another before i leave for school

Extensive travel in Asian region....exposure to working with people of more than 6 nationalities

Extra curricular during work:
- Always wanted to learn a musical instrument as a child n spent the last 2 years picking up the classical paino..now givign my first paino exam in march
- Learning french due to interest in the lang and culture
- Play tennis and just picked up golf
- Led a team of 12 people and raised 12000 USD thru fund raising activities and used the money to build homes for families in cambodia in collaboration with Tabitha Cambodia. Spent a week in Cambodia for the project also.
- At work , committee member of the Network of Women and organized events for learning and development wing of the organization
- Led the charity arm of the network to organize fund raising events and volunteer work with the make-a- wish foundation
- Organized company wide events
- Reviewed CSR reports for the UN via an online volunteering program

Through univ and work I have always enjoyed working with children in different ways.

Interest
- Love keeping up to date on current affairs, reading,movies , meeting new people etc.

do i have a serious shot at the top 7 schools ? do advise which schools i should be looking at. Working in a B2C & B2B industries I have a strong liking for marketing and also an interest in innovation,entrepreneurship..no interest in investment banking type careers

I still have 8 months or so till my application so please advise what more i can do or highlight.

Yes, your profile looks very strong to me. I see no weak spots and plenty of strengths and distinctive assets. Given your marketing goals I think you should target Kellogg, Michigan, Berkeley Haas, Cornell, MIT, Duke, and UCLA--these are the top-ranked schools that place the largest percentages of MBAs in marketing.

Thanks for that.
One last quetsion- If I feel that harvard or stanford would be a good fit for me , at a later stage,based on general managment strengths or the hi-tech innovation exposure how would you rate my chances?

Aditi,

I would not discourage you from applying to either Stanford or HBS. You have a chance at both, though a better chance at HBS given the larger size of their class.
