Re: Evaluation for someone that has 5C+ and 3 W (withdrawals) [#permalink]
Unfortunately the C+s are in basic classes such as macroeconomic, microeconomic, investment analysis, risk. However I offet these by getting A's in advanced version of the basic classes like advanced economics, advance finance classes (Mergers, advanced corporates etc)

And the W's are in advance Finance (which i retook and gotten an A in) basic accounting (another A) when i retook), and one W came from an unfortunate internship credit because the internship I was doing decided they didn't need the credits and I was forced to withdraw from it. Technically I should have 2 Ws not 3. The third W was just an unfortunate accident.

So what should I do now, get a 730+ in GMAT? I don't need to get into PE, especially not without IBD experience, so getting into IBD in MM or BB would be ideal for now.

Thank you in advance to the two replies! Kudos for your help. More replies are appreciated.

I think the explanations you have for your grades (and that you have other As on your transcript to correspond to those classes) will certainly help you. A 3.5 overall GPA is fantastic -- my apologies if I was rather harsh in my initial post.

At this point though, you cannot change your uGPA. You have to look forward and get the best GMAT score you can -- to target the top schools, you should target 700+. Obviously, the higher, the better and the higher Quant score (as you're targeting IB), the better as well.

Once you have an actual GMAT score, you'll be better able to narrow down your list of target schools. You have lots of time until R1 next year, so take advantage of that. Get your exam done. Research your schools. Good luck!!

Hi Aerien,

Thank you, no worries about the harshness. I currently have a 700 GMAT, but I realize I'd like a 730+ I have a year to perfect that and will do so. Another thing I want to ask is, taking quant courses in top schools on the side, is that an option?

Hi,

Regarding your GPA, it sounds like you had a poor start, and then improved.

There are some things to do to enhance your candidacy right now. Studying for the GMAT and get a great score would help. But also being able to demonstrate leadership capabilities would be important. Try to lead projects at work and through extracurricular activities. And try to gain clarity on your short-term and long-term career goals. Figure out your strength and your passion, and figure out if investment banking role is a good way to channel your strength and passion by doing informational interviews if you haven't already done so.

Here's an article I wrote recently on career goals that may be of interest to you.

https://marveladmissions.com/the-power-i ... eer-goals/

You also need to invest significant amount of time researching schools by talking to current students or alums of the schools to see which schools can best support your career goals, and where you see yourself fit in best.

Please feel free to email me if you are interested in getting admissions consulting. clin@marveladmissions.com

Good luck!

So that is unfortunate, but no disaster either. Do make up for it on the GMAT, but also since they are specific courses and ones that you would be needing for your degree, I'd suggest hopping over to your local community college and refreshing your memory (and getting an A of course). It can show determination, and make up for the follies of youth a wee bit.

Thank you everyone for your help. GMAT, more school research and extra classes it is.

I am looking into Continuing studies /post baccalaureate classes in top schools such as NYU/Columbia etc - would that be an ideal? Maybe getting a 3.8-4.0 and doing classes in quantitative studies in finance?
