Hi mbaMission,

Would appreciate if you could evaluate my chances based on:

Background: 27 years-old male from Hong Kong (will that be treated as China from the adcom perspective?)
GMAT: 670 (plan to retake till got 700+)
When to apply: 2014 Q1
Target MBA: INSEAD (preferred), LBS and Kellogg 1Y
Education: MS Finance from a top UK business school (with distinction, top 5% of class); Bachelor degree from Hong Kong (GPA 3.6, 2 times dean list for last 2 years)
Work experience: 2 years corporate development with a startup marketing firm, 2 years with a top HR consulting firm (rewards consulting)
Certification: CFA and FRM
Extra curricular: Diversity council committee (only non management from HK office) at work, captain of a amateur basketball team, Chairman of PE society at school
Language: Fluent in Chinese and English
ST Career aspiration: Strategy consulting with MBB or 2nd tier (e.g. Booz, OW, ATK, LEK, OC&C and RB) in Asia
LT Career aspiration: Private Equity in China or stay as a consultant (aim partner)

Hi Jack,

Thanks for sharing your profile. You have a strong academic history, but you're right to retake the GMAT to try to get past the 700 mark. Your work experience is solid, but a little hard to connect the dots -- startup/marketing --> HR consulting --> strategy consulting --> PE. You're going to have to work on your career narrative. I don't think that consulting to PE makes for a good story (more likely IB --> PE), but neither IB nor PE flows from your past experience. Just need to really think about how you're framing your narrative.

ECs look good - especially captain of bball team. I don't see any community service in your profile - this is something I suggest you get involved in asap!

If you do hit that 700+ score, I think your school choices make sense, though I'd recommend adding some safety options to your list.

I would think that you'd be in the Chinese applicant pool, but I can't say for sure -- sorry!
